I Graduated!!!

I graduated a few weeks ago from the Utrecht School the Arts! Together with Ben Vinkenburg, Thijs Viegers and Jessy Suharyanto, I made a 4 minute animation: "Till Dance Do Us Part" ( The film is not yet finished and the site will probably be online at the end of the week. In the meanwhile you can like and follow our facebookpage:

Graduation made zombies out of us, but we managed to survive and graduate in time; after a few nights of 2 hours sleep at most, we finished our film just 1 minute before Thijs' exam, due to some rendering problems. Didn't had to have too much of a presentation this time, so standing there in front of my teachers like a zombie was no problem. They'd already seen the whole process in my first presentation, 2 months earlier. So I graduated at about 11 o' clock and had the rest of the day to party, do a powernap, and party some more.

So now that I'm graduated, I had to find a job. Luckily my old housemate and friend Junaid Chundrigar had a job for me. He made an Avengers fan film called Disassembled just after the Avengers became a hit, and then Stan Lee himself (creator of spiderman an lots of other superheroes) contacted him. So now Junaid has started a studio together with ex-classmate and animation-rockstar Davor Bujakovic, and they're making 2 awesome webseries; 'Bad Days' (for Stan Lee's World of Heroes) and 'Fanboy Rampage' for Mondo Media. I work at his studio 3 days a week now as a freelance animator. This is the first time I go to work wih a big smile on my face, so I like it very much!

Here's the Pilot for Fanboy Rampage. I animated the zombie-grandma that picks up her jaw from the floor.

Hope you like it.

Graduation film update

A lot has happened since my last post. We produced our new, simpler film in 6 weeks but didn't finish our film in time for our exam.
Luckily the teacher's where very positive about what we made so far. But, it wasn't finished, so we'll have to do another exam in august.

Anyway, this is a shot I animated. Just to give you a preview of what the animation is going to look like.

Graduation Film Update

Last couple of months we've been working on a five minute long animation film. We realised that we wouldn't be able to finish the film on time, but we were planning to work all summer on this film. Then, after our test exam, we needed to cut the film into a 3 minute version. We decided that we'd rather have a good short film with no longer version necessary, than a bad short version of a longer film. So now we have decided that we'll make a short (under 2 minutes) cartoony, funny animation film which can be completed within the 6 or 7 weeks we've got left. The background and character style will be simplified and the storyboard will be finished on thursday. That gives us 6.5 weeks to finish this film.

This new film still has some of the original components left, like the man in the wheelchair, a chase sequence, the dancing, the house upon the hill etc, yet it's much less complicated and funnier. To sum it up: he flees for his (fat psycho) wife who wants to dance with him.

Anyway, here's an animation test I made (with the new character designs). Hope you'll like it! This is were he dreams that he grows older all of a sudden...

Update on graduation film

Almost a year ago I started to generate ideas for my graduation film together with Ben Vinkenburg and Jessy Suharyanto. After a while, Jessy decided to make her own film, so past 6 months Ben and I worked on our film.
Last couple of weeks we've been into the preproduction full time. We came to the conclusion that we didn't have enough time to finish our film in time, so we asked our friend and classmate Thijs Viegers to join our project. Five days later, Jessy rejoined our project, so now we have a team of 4, which gives us the opportunity to make the film much better!

Within 4 weeks, the production will start. Ben will do the backgrounds, 3d animation/modeling etc and the compositing. Thijs will do the animatic, effect animation and character animation. Jessy and I will do character designs and animation.

Here's the first complete modelsheet and below an animation test.

More character design research

After some calculations 2 days ago we found out that we only have 20 minutes average for each frame of film (3 minute film, 12 fps), from rough animation to fully cleaned. That's nearly impossible with the standards we want for our film, so a simpler style was needed and we're currently looking for an extra team-member. This wil give us at least 30 minutes for each frame, which can make all the difference. But, we're not sure if we can find anyone...

Anyway, this simpler style will probably be the final style for our graduation film:

Character Designs for graduation film

Next couple of weeks I will be working on the character designs for my graduation short with Ben Vinkenburg. Here are 2 designs I spent more time on. The first one will probably be the one we choose. Of course much less detailed.

The character: It should be a Italian grandpa who used to dance the tango. Now he sits in a wheelchair and is a bit more grumpy.

Wolf for KLIK! promo

I animated this wolf for a promotional film I'm making together with some classmates for the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival.

The wolf is supposed to be Tex Avery's wolf from Red Riding Hood, with a little touch of my classmate Hilde's drawing hand (she designed it, I animated it).

Character Design for Graduation Film

First steps into designing characters for my graduation film with Ben Vinkenburg. This is a first version, first try. I'll be trying lots of different design's in the upcoming weeks.
